Our first meeting in Dudsbury Golf Club and a really interesting talk from Bill Coombes, who covered the history of gin from mediaeval times to the present gin “bubble.”
We learnt about the distillation process, taking some of us back to school chemistry lessons, and how the Dutch discovered how to introduce juniper berries to produce the forerunner of what we know today as gin.
We heard how William of Orange introduced it’s manufacture to the UK and how the gin consumption reached epidemic proportions in London and other cities. How tax was imposed, and removed when the population rioted, and how eventually control was restored by licensing and the introduction of licensing hours.
Bill concluded his talk with a demonstration of gin-making although, sadly, not in sufficient quantity for a tasting session!
In lieu of a fee, Bill requested that the Club make a donation to Macmillan Caring Locally. The committee decided that the surplus of £130 arising from the Barbecue would be used for this purpose and a cheque has been sent accordingly.
