Brought in at the last minute when our booked speaker dropped out, Susan Howe delivered more than we could have ever have hoped for!
Her anecdotes on the trials and tribulations of running what did, indeed, sound like Fawlty Towers were very amusing. We particularly amused by the tale of the escaped convict who stayed in their hotel and enjoyed their hospitality before leaving a large bill and absconding with the silverware.
Her stories of her time cooking for the rich and famous in the 1980s were equally amusing and were peppered with names from the society pages of the time. It is, beyond any doubt, a very different world to that which we inhabit.
A masterstroke by our Speaker Secretary, Peter Walmsley, and a very fitting finale to our year.
